King Street Wharf: Precision Steel Supply Supporting a Landmark Waterfront Redevelopment

A Partnership Forged in Experience and Trust

United Steel was proud to partner with Metal Projects in delivering a standout structural steel package for the King Street Wharf Upgrade—a transformative redevelopment in the heart of Sydney’s CBD. With a goal to elevate the waterfront experience, this high-profile project demanded precise execution, superior steel supply, and seamless coordination in a live public environment.

With over five years of collaboration between the two businesses, the synergy between United Steel and Metal Projects enabled the successful delivery of a technically complex, multi-phase structural build on time and to specification.

“When you have back-to-back site handovers, tight windows, and weather delays, the last thing you need is uncertainty in your steel supply. We’re here to remove that variable.”
Pernell Briggs, Account Manager, United Steel

Project Overview: Transforming the Promenade

The King Street Wharf Upgrade is a flagship public realm project that reimagined a vibrant waterfront promenade into a connected, architecturally cohesive space. Designed to enhance the dining and pedestrian experience, the redevelopment included six large glazed canopy structures installed across key hospitality venues along the promenade.

Metal Projects was engaged by Mainbrace Constructions to deliver the full 170-tonne steel package. Their scope included:

  • Structural steel detailing and fabrication
  • Painting and surface treatment
  • Complex cranage and installation across three staged phases

“At King Street Wharf, everything had to be millimetre-perfect. That level of planning only comes with experience and trust in your supply chain.”
Jason Babic, Managing Director, Metal Projects

United Steel’s Role: Precision. Performance. Partnership.

United Steel was responsible for supplying all structural steel for the project, fully processed and prepared for direct site installation. Our team delivered:

  • Cut-to-length and drilled-to-spec steel, ready for immediate assembly
  • Full traceability and compliance, meeting Green Star sustainability criteria
  • On-time delivery to suit staged installation and restricted site access
  • Flexibility and responsiveness to accommodate urgent requests and design changes

This approach ensured that Metal Projects could maintain workflow momentum despite logistical challenges, tight site windows, and operating within a live, high-traffic area.

“United Steel’s flexibility and quick response made a big difference. We needed a supplier that could move with us—and they did.”
Jason Babic, Metal Projects

Challenges Tackled. Excellence Delivered.

Delivering the steelwork at King Street Wharf meant navigating:

  • Limited access and space constraints in the CBD
  • Crane lifts and staging to avoid public disruption
  • Coordination with glazing, lighting, and shading subcontractors
  • Environmental exposure requiring premium coatings

Despite these constraints, Metal Projects and United Steel worked seamlessly to ensure quality, compliance, and precision on every weld, every bolt, and every delivery.

Sustainability and Compliance at the Forefront

All steel supplied by United Steel was fully traceable and compliant with Australian Standards, supporting Metal Projects’ goal to meet Green Star sustainability benchmarks. The finished canopies provide durable weather protection and reduce heat gain—enhancing the environmental performance and long-term functionality of the precinct.

“Fabricated steel that meets Green Star ratings is no longer a ‘nice-to-have’—it’s expected. We want to be at the forefront of sustainability.”
Jason Babic, Metal Projects

The Outcome: A Landmark Built on Steel

From concept to completion, the King Street Wharf Upgrade highlights the value of strategic supplier partnerships. The structural steel framework not only elevated the design of the promenade but also showcased the power of precision engineering and collaborative delivery.

“It’s one of those projects where every person on the team can walk by and say, ‘We did that.’ There’s pride in it, and that pride is earned.”
Jason Babic, Metal Projects
